Homemade Kaleidoscope Soda

Take advantage of that recycling pile! Turn your empty Baking Soda box into a homemade kaleidoscope. From ARM & HAMMER™ Summer Camp Counselor Amber Kemp-Gerstel

• 1 empty box ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda
• 1 toilet paper tube
• White cardstock paper, standard size
• 1 flexible straw
• Aluminum foil
• 1 permanent marker or pen for measuring
• 1 pair of scissors
• 1 roll of tape
• 1 12-inch ruler
• Colored markers or crayons for decorating
• Construction paper (optional)

1. Start with an empty box of ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda. Cut the box along the seams to disassemble and lay flat.
2. Use a ruler to measure a rectangle on the box that is 1 inch shorter than the toilet paper tube and 4 inches wide.
3. Cut out the rectangle and fold it into thirds lengthwise, smoothing the edges along the folds.
4. Cover with foil, wrapping as tightly and smoothly as possible. The smoother the foil, the more reflective it will be. Then put aside.
5. Decorate the toilet paper tube as you like. (The kids can use stickers, construction paper, or whatever markers haven’t dried out.) Then put aside.
6. Fold cardboard wrapped in foil into a triangle and tape the ends together. Then slide into middle of toilet paper tube.
7. Grab a flexible straw and trim about 2 1/2 inches from the longer side (so that the longer side is about the length of the toilet paper tube). Tape the straw along the top of your tube, leaving the flexible part hanging over the edge.
8. On the cardstock, cut out a few circles that are roughly 5 inches in diameter. Poke a hole in the middle of each for the straw. Decorate each cardstock cut out as you like.
9. Place the cardstock on the straw with the decorated side facing the tube.
10. Look through the open end and spin the decorated cardstock. Repeat with other cutouts and types of paper for different effects. (Or... just watch the video.)
