How Do You Use Baking Soda to Clean the Microwave?
You can clean your microwave with baking soda two different ways, and both include combining the baking soda with water. The first method involves boiling water containing baking soda in the microwave. The second entails creating a baking soda and water solution and cleaning your microwave with a sponge.
Don’t just sprinkle dry baking soda inside your microwave in an attempt to clean it, or heat a bowl of dry baking soda. Instead, follow one of these two easy methods.
How to Clean and Deodorize a Microwave Using Baking Soda and Water Boil
You can boil baking soda and water to help clean your microwave. When it’s in boiling water, the baking soda helps deodorize and absorb odors, while the steam loosens crusty foods or oils, making it easier to clean the inside of your microwave.
Follow these steps to help remove crusty foods and smelly odors from your microwave.
Supplies
- 2 tablespoons ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda
- 1 cup water
- Microwave-safe bowl or container
- Lint-free cleaning cloth such as microfiber
- Oven mitts
- Towel (optional)
Method
- Mix 2 tablespoons ARM & HAMMER™ Baking Soda with 1 cup water. Pour the mixture into microwave-safe bowl or container.
- Add bowl or container to the microwave on a high setting. Run the microwave for 5 minutes. As the baking soda and water mixture reaches a boil, it will let off steam that helps loosen foods or oils that have become stuck on the interior surface while also absorbing odors from the microwave.
- After time has expired, let the container stand for an additional 15 minutes.
- Take caution when removing the container as contents will be hot. You may want to use oven mitts when pulling it out of the microwave. Discard the contents of the bowl or container by pouring them down the sink.
- Dampen a cloth and wipe the inside of the microwave along the walls and on the top. You might also choose to remove the turntable and support ring to wipe them down separately.
- Leave the microwave door open to air-dry or dry the inside with a lint-free towel.
Voila! See how bringing your mixture of water and baking soda to a boil can help clean your microwave and get that burnt smell out. Now, you’re ready to reheat that coffee or leftover pasta!
Adding baking soda to boiling water can do more than just clean your microwave. Add a tablespoon of baking soda to a pot of water when boiling eggs to make them easier to peel, or boil baking soda and water to help remove burnt mess from scorched pans. Then, use these baking soda hacks to clean other areas of the kitchen, as well!
